Firms Take Action

This article explains the efforts internet firms are making in order to secure the identities of internet users, especially teens and children. Since the boom of internet predators recently and through out the years as well as the usage of information online in order to better advertise, the protection of personal information is necessary in order to maintain the safety of the internet users as well as to relieve/ save the reputation of the internet as a source in which privacy is constantly invaded and abused. These firms have been able to involve schools and educators in the protection of student’s privacy by allowing them to verify the student’s information that is posted and used online. This is because there is a major risk for the altering of information when used by online companies as well as the misuse of personal information. The basic confirmed information is used online to help advertisers by providing the minimal information needed to advertise such as age and gender however will not provide other personal information that is otherwise broadcasted online such as the users name location birth date and sometimes even picture. This, to me, is a sign of relief- that the internet firms are finally making efforts to protect its user’s information. When you think about everything we have spoken of in class, do you agree with me? Does this information make a difference in your opinion or is the fact that our information is being used still a major issue? Would you support an effort to post all users basic information online for the same minimal information advertising cause in the future?
