Are We Addicted?

This article was written in 2000 and I am very surprised that addictive internet usage was a big problem then for I believe it is more prevalent now more than ever. The article relates a survey that was conducted 8 years ago in order to interpret the affect internet usage has on its users and its classification as and addictive source. “Respondents reported an average caseload of nine clients who they classified as Internet-addicted, with a range between two to fifty clients treated within the past year.” Treatments have even been placed and recommended by counselors and therapists to help their patients overcome their addictions to the internet. Just by reading the title of this article I perceived how absolutely ridiculous it would be. As Americans, we are indeed addicted to the internet. This relates to the essay I will be writing this term by proving the theory we had in class of internet usage as not just a source of entertainment or information anymore. It is also a source of procrastination, and now, as stated in this article, it is a source of addiction. How do you feel about being able to compare the effects of internet usage to drug usage in this country? What about the future? Can you imagine a future of internet rehabs?!
